Geoff Martin

GEOFFRY MARTIN 1944 – 2021

After many years battle against Parkinson’s, Geoff sadly passed away on Sunday 4th July.

Geoff joined the Wigmore CC in 1960. He suffered with asthma and started cycling to improve his breathing problems, and it certainty worked.

When he started riding with the club, he used an inhaler to help  his breathing, but by the time he was 30 years old he no longer needed the inhaler. One thing he never did was use an inhaler before an event, he classed that as cheating.

Geoff was a keen trike rider and set many club records, in fact he still holds three records. They are the 30 mile trike record of 1h 20m 47s, set in 1969. The same year he set a 50 miles trike record with a time of 2h 17m 13s. In 1977 he was one of the members that set a solo team record for 30 miles with a time of 3h 38m 43s.

He had an attempt at road racing but could not handle the fast start. When asked what happened, his reply would be , “they would not wait for me”!

Geoff was always a willing helper with club events, and when I had to stop driving, Geoff took me to the evening events.

Geoff was married to Angela for 49 years, and our thoughts are with Angela at this sad time.

The funeral is on Thursday 29th July, at Bobbing crematorium, 11 am.

No flowers, but you can make donations to Parkinson’s UK and sent to John Weir funeral directors 127 Watling Street, Gillingham ME7 2YY .

Restart!

Wigmore CC is preparing for the restart of organised activities from 29th March in line with the Government’s Covid-19 Roadmap.

Our first activity to start will be our Go-Ride sessions at the Howard School on Saturday 3rd April.

There will be a booking system to ensure we manage numbers and safety in line with guidance applicable at the time.

Make sure to follow our Go-Ride Facebook page for more details: https://www.facebook.com/wigmoreccgoride/

We then restart our adult Club Rides on Sunday 4th April.

We meet at the Rainham Library car park for a 9 am set off, and will be using a registration form to coordinate rides within the guidance applicable each week.

Make sure to join our Wigmore CC Facebook Group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/www.wigmoer/?ref=share

We’re looking to restart with two rides each week; one for developing riders and one for more experienced riders looking for a longer ride.

All our Club activities are inclusive, we just need you and you need a suitable bicycle for the ride you’ll be joining.

Make sure to look out for updates on our Facebook pages.

January 2020 club night

Our January meet-up for the Wigmore CC social night is next week on Tuesday 14th January, 7-9pm at The Bike Warehouse in Gillingham High St.

Please feel free to come along and get involved. Reasons to come:

  • Catch up with other members of the club that you may not have seen for a while. If you were there at the inaugural meet-up in December, then come along and see how much weight everyone else has put on over Christmas!
  • Got some left-over Christmas cash? Caeran and Jason will be more than happy to help direct you to some shiny new parts for your bike, some club kit or that overdue bike service.
  • Roller racing competition – after a bit of fun in our December meeting and the realisation this is going to be a lot more competitive than first thought, the 2020 competition will be kicking off for real, culminating in adult and junior trophies at the end of the season.
  • Gillingham High Street’s best takeaway pizza! – will once again be making an appearance.

We had a good turnout in December from current members, past members and the youth riders from the Go-Ride club, which made for a great evening and a lot of fun with the roller racing. Why not come along to see what it is all about, support your club and your local community bike shop.

Postcode for the shop is ME7 1AZ. There is parking behind the shop in Britton Farm car park.

Hope to see you there on Tuesday.

Cyclocross tips

With the cyclocross season upon us, we should think about preparations so you can make a running mount into the season. We can take some hints from Simon Burney’s definitive (but, I think out-of print) book.

Unexpectedly high on his list is a visit to the Dentist before start of season. Infections here can affect the whole body as well as being sensitive to vibrations.

Cyclo-cross can be hard on the bicycle. A pre-season service will avoid most problems. New sprockets and chain are a really good investment as you need to be confident to give that harder-than-normal push to get over obstacles. You can usually do the first few races in the dry using your existing (semi-slick tyres) but again don’t take chances if you have been getting punctures lately. Invest in some new tyres with sharp knobs by the time the first rain comes so you can have maximum fun. With pre-season preparations and a bit of luck, you should get by with new brake pads after wet races (maybe not even that with disc brakes).

A Wigmore skinsuit is a good investment on so many levels. Most importantly, track-side photographers love Wigmore colours so you will be able to choose your favourite shots. Club colours also make racing more interesting as you can identify with the people you overtake twice per lap. With frequent dismounts to run over obstacles, the tighter fit of a skinsuit reduces the chances of a fall caused by getting jersey or shorts caught on the saddle and wastes less time keep straightening clothing to avoid draughts or mud. Skinsuits work well on their own in early events, and then with a thermal undervest might stretch over a long-sleeved jersey. That is often enough for flat-out 45-minute races. Of course, by February you’ll be in Duffle coat, scarf and mittens whatever you normally use. I found the club kit to be really comfortable and as durable as anything else. Although skinsuits look fragile, they are pretty much the same as other items of clothing just without the gaps. With care – it will last a couple of seasons of cross and evening tens.

Hopefully, someone can recommend a good Dentist. Everything else is available from The Bike Warehouse.

Crystal Palace

Hi there everyone, this is Finn Dunton reporting!

Tonight (28th May 2019)  myself and Millie Dean raced at the weekly summer Crits series at Crystal Palace. Millie’s raced in the Under 12’s and had around 7 or 8 riders with a fast pace. Millie was brilliant, finishing 3rd girl.

I raced in the under 16’s and there was about 25 to 30 riders. It was a very fast race from the start with the group splitting in two. I couldn’t stay with the main group as the pace was too fast on a track that I wasn’t confident on (as I had never ridden it before).

Results are to follow.

Thank you for reading.

25 mile time trial

32nd Bill Philbrook Memorial 25 Mile Time Trial
Sunday 5th May 2019

This event was promoted for and on behalf of CYCLING TIME TRIALS under their rules and regulations.

Wigmore CC and the Philbrook family would like to say thank you for supporting this year’s Bill Philbrook Memorial 25 Mile Time Trial and contributing to the success of our event.

Unfortunately, the race was shortened to a 10mile time trial on the Q10/6 due to roadworks, a blessing in disguise perhaps as there were a few sighs of relief due to the cold but dry conditions of this year’s event. The turnout was still very good for the amended course, so thanks to all the riders.

Event Sec: Martin Trice

Chris Fennell, last year’s winner of the Bill Philbrook Memorial was once again victorious, setting a new course record with his time of 20 minutes dead, removing 1m 50s from the previous course record of 21:50.

Emma Lewis produced a stunning ride to win the ladies competition and take fourth overall, taking an impressive 2m 20s off the previous record of 24:36

Neil Lauder held the course record for just nine minutes with his equally remarkable time of 20:37

The team prize was taken by VeloRefined.com Aerosmiths led by 2017 winner Andrew Meilak and supported by Mark Hill and Paul Smith.

Andrew also won the vets competition for the third year running.

The Philbrook family donate a trophy to the event for the fastest member of the Wigmore CC as the promoting club. Rodney Smith was the fastest rider home and will take the trophy at the end of the year.

As always, a big thank you to all of the timekeepers, marshals and supporters who helped to ensure everything went ahead safely and smoothly. We have a core group of people who regularly support this event, to whom we are all extremely grateful, as without them we would be in danger of not being able to run the event at all. Similarly, we also had some new faces joining us this year to help with marshalling duties, which is important for the continued success of time-trialling.

Timekeepers: Paul Mepham and Vic Williams
Recorder and assistant: John Clegg
Signing in/out: Reg
Pushing off: Robert Philbrook
Results board: Martin Trice
Chief marshal: Antony Bee
Marshals (Chilham): John Booty, Paul Buckley & Dave Bedford
Marshals (Canterbury): Paul Gatenby, Kevin Ford & Jamie Harris
Tea and cakes: Laura, Hanna, Anna, Jess & Alison (Philbrooks)

A big thank you to the Philbrook family who helped to ensure all the roles on the day were covered and continued to maintain the association between Bill Philbrook and the Wigmore Cycling Club.

Help For Heroes 2019

Saturday 29th June entry is only £20.00 for 75km/47mile charity ride.

Some of you may know Steve Craddock the organiser of the Cycle 4 Heroes. Steve is one of the guys who helps our own Ben Foames out in Belgium and spends all his spare time supporting Help for Heroes.

We would like the club to get behind this event, as we know it’s on our local roads and yes we could ride on them any day of the week, but we think this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the club.

So the challenge to our club is to see more Wigmore jersey’s than Help for Heroes jersey’s on the ride.
